Stay Forever Young

Pepsi "Stay Forever Young"

With the slogan, "Every generation refreshes the world", Pepsi once again tried to reinvent the way its customers viewed the process of drinking their product. By appealing to the patriotic feelings of America, Pepsi brings forth the idea that freshness not only relates with beverages, but also with age. This advertisement addresses the notion that although technology and other advancements have changed throughout the years, the reliability that Pepsi ensures stands still.
Throughout this commercial, touching images and themes evoke a proud sense of achievement throughout the history of America. Presented at first with images from the past, those images are then juxtaposed with present- day images. The first of the many themes is that of war. The first is a child running into the arms of his father who had just come home from war; the second being a son running into the arms of his mother who has also just come home from war. The nationalism exemplified in this juxtaposition is immediately followed by a technological theme. When lighters were once used at a concert, cell phones have now replaced them; country, rap; old car, new car; Gumby, Shrek; the Twist, Krumping; bottle, can. No matter what has changed, the patriotism that America has shown throughout the years has pushed through, as pictured in the clips with the American flags waving in the background. As well as the flag has stood as our nations backbone, so has Pepsi.
The background song that is being emphasized contains the phrase "May you stay forever young", as if drinking Pepsi products will keep you young, just as it has for our nation. Through this advertisement, Pepsi hopes to acknowledge the fact that just as the main focus of America has stayed the same throughout the years, no matter what the changes, so has Pepsi. "And may you have a strong foundation when the winds of change do shift."
